Gordon Ramsay, celebrity chef and restaurateur, renowned for his critically acclaimed restaurants, tv shows and recipe books, but perhaps best recognized in the early 21st century for the profanity and blazing intensity he openly exhibited on his cooking programs like Hell’s Kitchen. Born in Scotland in 1966, Gordon Ramsay abandoned his early sports career to become a famous chef in London. In the early 2000s, he marked his debut on British TV as the erratic host of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen series, eventually making a healthy transition to American audiences. Since then, the award-winning chef has extended his brand of celebrities through programs such as MasterChef and Hotel Hell and opened more restaurants across the globe.
Gordon was born in Johnstone, Scotland, and educated in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, after he and his parents arrived when he was at the age of five. Ramsay’s first passion was soccer, and he focused his attention on a professional soccer career. At 15, the promising Ramsay joined the Glasgow Rangers, a pro soccer club. His tenure with the team lasted for three years, until 1985, when a knee injury abruptly ended his career. Forced to continue, Ramsay returned to his studies, getting a degree in hotel management in 1987.
Called Cook of the Year at the 2000 Catey Awards and Independent Restaurateur of the Year in 2006, Ramsay took his hotel business to the U.S. in 2006 with the launch of two restaurants in NYC. Since then, the famous chef has extended his presence across the world, taking his business to South Africa, Australia, and Canada. Beginning with Gordon Ramsay’s Passion for Flavour (1996), Ramsay published many top-selling cookbooks. He wrote the autobiographical volumes Humble Pie (2006) and Gordon Ramsay’s Playing with Fire (2007).
