Kamala Harris, the current vice president of the United States, the first female vice president, the first Asian American to hold the position, and the first person of color to be elected vice president.
Kamala was born in 1964 in Oakland, California. Reared in the mainly African American community of Berkeley, she was taken to civil rights marches as a toddler and sang in a Baptist choir. After graduating from Howard University and Hastings College of Law at the University of California, Kamala proceeded on a path through California’s judicial system, culminating as the State Attorney General in 2010. Following the November 2016 polls, Harris became the second African American woman and the first South Asian American to gain a seat in the Senate.
She announced her nomination for the 2020 U.S. presidential election on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2019, but he lost the nomination before the end of the year. In August 2020, Joe Biden declared that Harris was the vice-presidential runner, and after a tight contest, Biden and Harris were elected in November 2020.
In early 2019, Harris released two books: The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, which is an autobiography that focuses on her career, intimate relationships and childhood. The other book us Superheroes Are Everywhere, another autobiography in a children’s picture book style. In 2009, she published Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer, which illustrates her ideology and ideas for reforming law enforcement.
